Frequently Asked Questions before a hospital stay:

Question What documents should I bring to the hospital on the day of my admission?

The following documents are required: the letter of referral from your doctor, your health insurance smart card and all medical documents necessary for surgery.

Question What clothes do I need to take into hospital?

Items recommended to bring:

  • bathrobe,
  • training suit or house suit (jacket with zipper or buttons),
  • comfortable but still durable slippers,
  • pajamas or nightgown (preferably front opening, if available),
  • Underwear

Two days after your surgery, you will not need your own underwear.

Question What is the probable length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) after surgery?

Median duration of the ICU stay is 24 hours, and then patients are transferred to the general unit.

Question When are patients allowed to stand up for the first time after surgery?

Our patients are mobilized again as quickly as possible. It is particularly important for the thrombosis prevention. Our physiotherapists are specialized in techniques of early mobilization. It means (to you) that in the afternoon of the first postoperative day you can already leave the bed for a short while. On the second postoperative day you can already take a little walk along the hospital corridor, attended by physiotherapists.

Question How does the telephone function?

All station beds are provided with telephone. On the day of your admission you will be given a secret code to unlock the telephone by your bedside. All call charges will be registered onto your secret number. You will pay the bill at the cash desk in the foyer at the end of your hospital stay. If you leave the hospital at the weekend or at a time the cash desk is closed, we will send the bill per post.

Question Can I use a mobile phone in hospital?

A total ban on mobile phone use in the Kerckhoff Clinic has been lifted. However, we wish to appeal to all our patients to use mobiles as seldom as possible. For one thing, other patients could feel disturbed or be apprehensive of adverse effects, for another thing, you should be able to recover in piece.

Question Are there TV sets in the rooms and how do they function?

All station wards are provided with television sets. The television sets can be turned on and off using the remote control and they do not need to be unlocked, i.e. their use is free of charge. If you want, you can bring headphones for example like those used on airplanes.

Question What is the average length of stay in the Kerckhoff Clinic, until the patient is transferred to the rehabilitation unit?

The duration of the hospital stay is 8 - 10 days, if there are no complications arising during treatment. Ideally patients can be transferred to the rehabilitation unit earlier, though it happens rather seldom. The most of our patients are admitted to the rehabilitation clinic after 8 - 10 days of in-hospital treatment.

Question What is the length of stay in the rehabilitation center?

The duration of the rehabilitation stay is normally not more than 3 weeks, after that the patients are discharged to home. Meanwhile, there exists the possibility of outpatient rehabilitation. If you are interested in this kind of rehabilitation, please contact your health insurance.
